Exquisite Corpse Brainstorm

I have never used Adobe Audition, nor have I ever created any sort of soundscape before, so I was initially quite intimidated by this project. I didn’t really have a clear plan as to what I wanted to convey with this piece nor did I know how I was going to do it. I knew that sitting around idly, waiting for that lightbulb to turn on with my ingenious idea would only lead to more procrastination, so I decided to just start playing around with soundbites, hoping to find inspiration that way. I listened to all of the sounds from our shared folder and downloaded about 20 of the ones that spoke to me. After importing them to Audition, I created a couple tracks using my top 5 favorite sounds and played around until I created something with a vision. I had a combination of a lighter flicking on and off, a pencil writing on paper, some guitar strumming, someone tapping on a container, and someone playing the drums. After playing around with those clips for about an hour, I was finally able to hear a story being told. The sound I created painted a picture in my head of someone in their bedroom trying to write a song. I saw papers being crumpled in frustration, lines being written and erased, and a lot of experimentation that ultimately lead to music, which is parallel to how I feel about this project as well.

Based on where I currently stand in my process of experimentation, my vision for this piece is to show the slow, possibly painful, yet necessary progression that is art. Whether it be writing lyrics to a song, drawing a composition, coming up with a combination of chords for music, or finding your inspiration for a project on Adobe Audition, I hope this piece will prove that art is a process.
